Communication Pathway

Using core word kits to develop communication

Length of presentation is 30 mins (12:15 - 12:45pm)

We’re from Drummore Primary, an ASL school in Drumchapel, Glasgow. Over the last two years, we’ve been working closely with CALL Scotland to embed our “Drummore Core” approach into daily communication practice and to develop practical, accessible Core Kits for every classroom.

In this workshop, we’ll share our journey—what we’ve learned, what we’ve adapted, and how the Core Kit has helped make communication more consistent, meaningful, and empowering for our learners. Join us to hear about and see examples of classroom implementation.

Small changes, big impact: Our assistive technology journey

Length of presentation is 30 mins (12:15 - 12:45pm)

This session explores how a single professional development experience became the catalyst for transformative changes in how we use digital tools to support our learners at Whinhill Primary School. We have always been very proud of the support that we offer our pupils, and attending the CALL Scotland 5-week Assistive Technology Course has allowed us to take our support to the next level.

Since implementing these tools, we have witnessed a significant rise in attainment and pupil confidence, as children who previously faced barriers to learning now engage with the curriculum with newfound independence.

To ensure this impact is sustainable and learner-driven, we have created a dedicated team of pupil and parent ambassadors. These ambassadors play a vital role in trialling, reviewing and sharing various aspects of Assistive Technology, ensuring the technology we use truly meets the needs of our learners.

Through regular, high quality staff training, we have upskilled both teaching and support staff at our school, fostering a culture of expertise and confidence in using Assistive Technology.

We are proud to have shared our practice with both Primary and Secondary colleagues from our Inverclyde cluster schools, helping to build a wider network of support and ensure a more inclusive and smooth transition for all learners.

One of our P5 pupils described reading and writing as being like a ‘locked door that I can’t get through’ and the new digital technology that she had been trialling as a ‘key that’s helped me unlock the door’.

While we celebrate these successes, our journey continues to grow. We will continue to explore new technology and innovations to ensure that every child has the tools they need to succeed.

Small steps with AI: Try it, believe it

Length of presentation is 30 mins (12:15 - 12:45pm)

Building on Aileen's recent CALL Scotland webinar, this hands-on session puts delegates in the student's seat. They will interact with AI-powered classroom platforms, submit answers by typing or by speaking, and experience the instant feedback their learners would receive. Through practical, classroom-tested examples, Aileen will show how AI can reduce barriers and build confidence for learners with Additional Support Needs, including tools that allow learners to use their voice rather than rely on writing. All delegates need is a phone, tablet or laptop and a willingness to have a go.
