Embracing Technology in Education

Length of presentation is 40 mins (9:50 - 10:30am)

Join us for an insightful workshop featuring a young dyslexic learner as they share their unique journey with technology in education. This pupil was the first child in their primary school to use an iPad in class, sparking varied reactions from teachers and peers. They'll discuss some of the educational apps they used, like spelling games, and their love for Harry Potter audio books, comparing Siri's reading to Stephen Fry's.

They will also share their personal experience of transitioning to high school with their iPad, facing challenges like teachers' unfamiliarity with the device, issues with school WiFi, and the limitations of Siri with whiteboard notes. They'll share experiences with Gaelic medium education and the Ceitidh voice, and how dictation accuracy has evolved.

Discover the unexpected benefits of the iPad, such as their passion for digital art, leading to a part-time graphic design course. Learn how they navigate travel with their iPhone, use their iPhone to apply for jobs and help younger students with their iPads.

Integrated Learning: Immersive, Sensory & Assistive Communication Technology

Length of presentation is 40 mins (9:50 - 10:30am)

Introducing a practical approach to delivering sensory-rich lessons that support communication and assistive technology (AT) use across a range of settings – from mainstream and SEND classrooms to dedicated sensory and immersive spaces.

We’ll demonstrate how Magic Room, an inclusive learning system, can help make better use of the tools you already have – connecting switches, touchscreens, eye gaze, voice input, and movement with responsive sensory feedback. The system supports learners with a wide range of needs, including those with complex physical or sensory challenges.

You’ll learn how to:
Plan and deliver lessons that combine sensory engagement, communication goals, and access tools
Support learners with CVI and varied access needs using adaptable visual content
Use AT to increase participation and support progress
Apply these approaches in both classroom settings and immersive environments
Whether you're a teacher, therapist, or school leader, this session aims to provide clear, transferable ideas to support inclusive teaching within your setting.
